St. Davis of Savannah was handwoven on a Jacquard loom entirely on the day of Troy Davis’ execution at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison. Each of the 2700 weft threads laid into this hanging were acts of endurance made while listening to coverage of his execution proceedings and protests over the course of 20 hours. Under an international spotlight, Davis’ corporeal reality and last words were consumed. Here, St. Davis of Savannah is both eroded by state violence and illuminated by the innocence he maintained for 20 years on death row.
